3D Hydrography (3DHP) Interest Group

 Good morning, 

The week of July 25^th, the USGS will be hosting a federal working group meeting for 3DEP and 3DHP. They have asked agency members (NSGIC included) to provide feedback on a few questions as they look forward to 3DHP and the next generation of 3DEP. I will be presenting the NSGIC responses at the meeting and I would really appreciate everyone's input! I think this is a great way to give feedback to the federal agencies, all at once.

The questions are:

• What is one lesson learned from your agency or organization perspective on acquiring and using NHD and 3DEP data that could be applied as we design and implement 3DHP and next gen 3DEP?
• Are elevation and hydrography data needs integrated in your agency or organization? How can intra-agency collaboration be improved?

 

A Google sheet has been set up to help consolidate responses, which can be found at this link. If you could please take a moment to put down your thoughts and experiences by Wednesday, July 20th, I would really appreciate it! And apologies if you are getting this message twice, as I have also sent it out to the 3DEP interest group.

A member of this group asked me for clarification so I thought I'd share more broadly in case others have similar questions. 

The term "acquisition" is a bit new to the hydrography community so for clarification, we're thinking of the term in a broad sense – deriving or producing hydrography data however you've done it up to now.  Feel free to substitute "producing" NHD if that makes more sense for your circumstances.   

The term Intra-agency was used intentionally. This meeting will bring two federal working groups together – each with representatives from many of the same federal agencies so we're asking how/if the working group members interact within their agencies. For example, how does FEMA integrate or coordinate elevation and hydrography needs within the agency to facilitate flood mapping? For states, do you have information about how agencies interact or coordinate where different departments, for example, may be focused more on one dataset than the other. How can interaction within state agencies be improved?
